A New Way to View Your Fitness Plateau
If you’ve been in the strength training game long enough, you’ve likely experienced a plateau.
In the same way that the stock market doesn’t just go straight up all the time, nor can your gains. The stock market needs time to consolidate its gains. Our bodies do, too.
During my first seven years in the CrossFit space, I would regularly hit new PRs, always seeking out the next little edge to help me lift more or move faster. As an ex-athlete this, fueled me to push harder. It was really fun and exciting.
But when gains stop happening (or life changes), it's frustrating. I hear people talk about how they wish they could get back to where they were previously. Think back to when you were getting PRs all of the time. Were you satisfied with your progress? Most likely not. You were probably thinking of that next thing you wanted to check off the list or the next strength gain you would make. Meaning, you weren’t static in your thinking.
What makes you think that hitting that same goal you had before will fulfill you this time around? Hate to break it to you, but it probably won’t. You’ll be onto the next of/when you hit it.
When working with folks in their health endeavors, they regularly hear us talk about “falling in love with the process.”
When you solely focus on the outcome, you hit a goal, cheer for yourself, and start focusing on your next goal. Instead, focus on enjoying the efforts and how they make you feel. Loving the process will push you farther.
This reinforces our goal of falling in love with the process; it's how you build sustainability.
I keep reshaping the lens through which I see my health goals.
My journey tracks constantly up and to the right. It’s never-ending because I’m constantly adapting, which fuels my personal evolution.
My process takes the 6 Pillars of Health and tweaks one at a time. I focus on that one small thing until becomes habit. I only move on to the next thing when once I've made it a habit. Sound familiar? If you’ve worked with us, it should.
If your workouts are serving you now, look to another area that you can start to tweak today. Are you drinking enough water? Getting enough sleep? Prioritizing protein? Create a doable goal for yourself, and make it something you'll feel good about checking off your to-do list.
